Many shelter doors are manufactured and developed by companies with little to no design experience. Many of these companies only seasonally build storm shelters. Just as the shelter bodies experience a number of issues with specific materials, the doors are no different. Steel tornado shelter doors are often extremely heavy and very cumbersome to operate. While intially, they meet or exceed FEMA debris impact standards, how will the doors hold up once they begin to rust in the field? Will the internally mounted shocks become missiles or flying projectiles if the door is impacted? Will the fiberglass door rot all the way thru? How badly will the UV damage the fiberglass construction? Don't subject yourself to these worries!
